Build Your Hurricane Supply Kit NOW!

Hurricane season is officially here!  If you haven’t started putting together your hurricane supply kit yet, now is the time.  Don’t wait until the storm is on its way – supplies will be short and lines will be long!

Knowing that you are stocked up and prepared for the storm will make things much easier if and when one is approaching.  You will have plenty of other things to handle so having one less thing to do will make a world of difference.

After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours. You also need to consider what unique needs your family has including pets, seniors and medications.

Below is a checklist of items you should definitely include in your kit. Most of the items are inexpensive and easy to find, and any one of them could save your life.

  • Water – at least one gallon of water per person per day
  • Food – minimum of a three day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlights
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties
  • Duct tape and tools to turn off utilities and make minor repairs
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery – solar power chargers are very popular!
