Entering the Home Stretch of Hurricane Season in South Florida

October 1, 2018

We have emerged from the fourth month of hurricane season without any battle wounds. But don’t let that fool you – hurricane season is still alive and well here in South Florida! In fact, some of the most severe storms in the past 20 years have made their appearance in the latter portion of the season.

While the experts predict that the change in ocean patterns may have lessened our chance for a devastating storm, Mother Nature has too often proved to be completely unpredictable.

As snowbirds start to return to sunny Florida, there are still preparations to be made should one of these storms head our way.  Fortunately, many seasonal residents haven’t experienced the wrath of a hurricane yet and although you’ve wintered in Florida for decades, there’s still a chance for that first time. And it’s not the kind of experience you want to be unprepared for!

Now that your supply kits have been sitting in the closet for a few months, it’s best to do a check-up on everything. Make sure that your family hasn’t found your secret stash of non-perishable food. Maybe you borrowed some water from your hurricane supply on that rainy day you were supposed to go grocery shopping. Double check your batteries, lanterns and other back-up electronics to ensure they are fully charged and functional.

Taking just a few minutes to double check the preparations you made months ago could save you hours of frustration and hassle should the unexpected happen.
