You Can Never Be Too Prepared For Hurricane Season!

July 8, 2019

We are still in the early weeks of the hurricane season in Florida, but it’s never too soon to start preparing for a potential storm.

If you’ve ever been in Florida when a hurricane is headed our way, you are familiar with the craziness that unfolds at the stores and gas stations. You will have enough to do with preparations at your home, you shouldn’t have to worry about collecting supplies too.

After a storm, you may need to survive on your own for several days without the luxuries we are accustomed to like running water and electricity. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours. You also need to consider what unique needs your family may have such as pets, seniors and specific medications.

I highly recommend that you start putting together a hurricane preparedness kit with items that are inexpensive and easy to find before the storm hits.  Here are just a few suggestions of what you can start putting together now:

  • Water – at least one gallon of water per person per day
  • Food – minimum of a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Extra batteries
  • Flashlights
  • First aid kit
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio
  • Moist hygiene towelettes
  • Garbage bags and plastic ties
  • Duct tape and tools to turn off utilities and make minor repairs

Planning and preparing can make a big difference in safety and resiliency in the wake of a hurricane. The ability to quickly recover following a hurricane requires a focus on preparedness, advance planning, and knowing what to do in the event of a hurricane.
